And what corrupt non-entity could von der Leyen possibly have selected to be her deputy? In fact, she has appointed six Vice-Presidents, to really spread the pork around. So determined is she to find jobs for failed politicians from every member state, that the Commissioners’ job titles have come to resemble small poems made up of abstract nouns…
Preparedness
Cohesion and Reforms
Interinstitutional Relations and Transparency
Implementation and Simplification
Preparedness [again] and Crisis Management
…and bureaucratically-mandated adjectives:
Clean, Just and Competitive Transition
Quality Jobs
A Competitive Circular Economy
Mediterranean [is this an adjective lacking a noun or a noun lacking an article?]
But let us talk about Kaja Kallas, not only a Vice-President but also a High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Having become leader of her dad’s political party, perhaps we should not be surprised that she has a child-like understanding—or rather lack of understanding—of the world, or even that part of the world for which she is a Vice-President and High Representative.
Kallas is so ignorant of European history that she thought it clever and interesting to say the following:
Our experience behind the Iron Curtain after the Second World War, countries like Ireland got to build up their prosperity, but for us it meant atrocities, mass deportations, suppressing your culture and language.
This despite the fact that her experience behind the Iron Curtain was quite comfortable, given her father’s seniority in the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. But Macdara’s point is that it was a surprise to the Irish to learn that we are unfamiliar with atrocities, mass deportations, and cultural and linguistic suppression. It is also very clearly the case that Ireland’s wealth post-dated the period of Actually Existing Socialism in Europe—what prosperity did Ireland have from the 40s through to the 80s? In short, it is hard to think of a worse argument, or a more public way of flaunting your ignorance.
But we must admit that this is a woman who knows what she wants: she wants War and she wants Money. As evidence for the first assertion, there is her insane opining that Russia should be broken up, which could only be accomplished by force, but furthermore could only be sustained by continued force and the subversion of the democratic will of the Russian people, who would naturally be as keen to end Partition as all other nations that have been torn apart. As evidence for the second assertion, there is her husband’s substantial business interests in Russia, and her inability to see why it seems like a problem for her to get rich off trade with Russia while grandstanding in the most apocalyptic manner about people who trade with Russia.
Ignorant, disgusting, rich: it will not be these people fighting in the war to which their behaviour will give rise. But they are fools if they think the rest of us have forgotten about the only war that matters—let the Reader remember and repeat as often as necessary: No War but Class War!
